OYAM - The police in the North Kyoga region swiftly diverted traffic from the Kampala-Gulu highway after a fatal crash at Ngato swamp on the Gulu-Kamdini road in Oyam district.
The accident occurred around 2:30 am on March 12, 2025, completely blocking the highway.
According to police reports, a trailer heading towards Gulu developed mechanical issues. While the driver attempted repairs, another trailer crashed into it, killing the first driver on the spot and injuring the second.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said efforts were underway to tow the wreckage.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes to avoid delays.
Gulu-bound drivers are advised to use the Minakulu Town Council route, connecting to the Oyam-Lira road leading to Kamdini.
Kampala-bound drivers are advised to take the Kamdini-Atapara-Oyam road, then proceed to the Minakulu-Gulu road.
Lira-bound motorists should connect via the Aboke-Iceme road in Oyam, leading to the Bobi-Gulu road into Gulu.
Heavily loaded trucks heading to Kampala should avoid the Kamdini route and instead take the Aboke-Iceme-Bobi-Gulu road.
Trucks destined for Gulu should also use the Bobi-Kamdini route.
Police have urged drivers to remain patient, follow officers' instructions, and cooperate to ensure safety during this disruption.
