Tragedy strikes as Katakwi district health officer dies in road crash

Tragedy has struck Katakwi district following the death of the district health officer, Dr Simon Ichumar Omeke, in a road crash at Ogoloi village along the Soroti–Katakwi road.
According to eyewitnesses, the crash occurred on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at around 10 pm as Dr Ichumar was driving to his home in Soroti city after a day’s work at Katakwi District Local Government.
He was travelling with two passengers, a man and a woman.
Reports indicate that the woman, identified only as Charity, was seated in the front passenger seat alongside Dr Ichumar, while an elderly man, believed to be the driver of Dr Ichumar’s tractor, was seated in the back.
Katakwi LC5 chairperson Geoffrey Omolo visited the scene and confirmed the incident on April 8, 2026.
Although police had not yet issued an official statement, Omolo said the vehicle, registration number UG 6670M, may have developed a mechanical fault.

He explained that the car first veered off the road before crashing into a bridge, suggesting that the driver may have struggled to regain control.
Omolo added that the steering wheel is believed to have detached during the crash, causing extensive damage to the front of the vehicle.
Both passengers sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts. The woman seated in the front and the elderly man in the rear were rushed for medical attention.
Dr Ichumar’s body is currently at Bethesda Hospital mortuary, while the injured passengers are receiving treatment at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.
Area LC1 chairperson Richard Okello said this was the first fatal motor crash recorded at the spot in many years, although a recent motorcycle accident occurred there without fatalities.
Dr Simon Ichumar Omeke was a Ugandan public health specialist and medical doctor who was recognised as a health leader in the Teso sub-region, with a focus on maternal health, male involvement in antenatal care, and disease control.
