The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has revealed plans to install traffic lights at the just opened queen's way and circular clock tower.

The revelations were made by the spokesperson of UNRA Allan Ssempebwa on X, formerly Twitter, as he was reacting to the confusion of motorists at the clock tower.

The confusion was as a result of motorists who lacked patience getting trapped for several minutes in the middle of the road with no help from traffic Police officers.

Ssempebwa clarified how the Kampala Flyover Project was opened during the Non Aligned Movement summit (NAM) to alleviate traffic congestion around this area but the roads at clock tower still remained a construction site.

Ssempebwa added how the area no longer suffers from extreme traffic congestion due to the widened lanes and spacious driving environment.

"To mitigate traffic conflict. Traffic Police officers have been deployed as a temporary measure, assisted by safety signs. Installation of signs is still ongoing and should be complete by end of March this year," Ssempebwa said.

He added that the project will include the installation of traffic lights to ease traffic movement.

"These will be installed at the four intersections of the Clock Tower area. This will allow for proper traffic control and eventually alleviate the current traffic crisscrossing," Ssempebwa added.

He appealed to all motorists to exercise caution and drive responsibly since closing off the area is not an option currently, but could be considered if poor driver behaviour persists.

The flyover project which involves a 3.5km circular footbridge was launched in 2018 by President Yoweri Museveni.

The project worth sh300b is to be funded by the Ugandan government in partnership with the Japanese government, backed by a loan from the Japan International Co-operation Agency.
