Hundreds of devout Catholics in the Archdiocese of Tororo walked in solidarity with Jesus Christ on Friday, April 3rd, 2026, participating in the Way of the Cross procession.

This annual event, key to Holy Week observance, marked through a play by the Christians from the three Catholic parishes of Uganda Martyrs Nyangole, Agururu, and Sacred Heart, served as a reminder of Christ's final hours, culminating in his crucifixion and burial.

The joint procession was led by Rev. Fr. Timothy Mayamba Masaba, Dean of Sacred Heart Catholic Deanery, and Rev. Fr. William Ojulo, the Rector of Uganda Martyrs Cathedral, Nyangole, beginning at Sacred Heart Catholic Parish, where participants commenced with the recitation of the Rosary before embarking on their reflective journey.

The faithful traversed through Uhuru Drive, Kwapa Road, Railway Road, and Nyangole Road, stopping at various stations along the way to meditate on the events leading to Christ's death and resurrection before concluding at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral, Nyangole, marking the culmination of the day's solemn observance.

It's at the final station that Fr. Mayamba emphasised the significance of the day and its message of perseverance, urging the Christians to internalise the lessons of Christ's sacrifice and to maintain a spirit of prayer and unity with Christ beyond the procession itself.

"This is a very important day when the Church looks forward to the resurrection. The Church walks the Way of the Cross with the Lord Himself; it's not just a memorial, it's something we are doing with Him, and which we are experiencing with our own lives—the pain of the cross," Fr. Mayamba stated.

He also cautioned against the tendency to let the day's reflection end with the procession.

"On a day like this, I know people have observed the Way of the Cross in different ways, but there's a tendency to relax after walking and say it's over, returning to life as usual. My encouragement is that Christians shouldn't stop at the Way of the Cross, but maintain the character of the day, which is one of silence, deep prayer, a mood of suffering and pain, and uniting ourselves with the suffering of Christ. Therefore, I would encourage you not to relax but remain in the same mood and unite yourselves in prayer to the Holy Church," he explained.

Joining the Christians was John Okea, the District Chairperson of Tororo, who underlined the importance of unity, drawing parallels between Christ's betrayal and the challenges facing the district. He implored the people of Tororo to emulate the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation demonstrated by Jesus, fostering a community free from the divisions of tribalism and political strife.

"Jesus, who was a leader, was betrayed by one of his disciples, yet it was God's will. Still, he prayed for our forgiveness. I want to call upon our people of Tororo to always have this in their minds so that maybe one day, we shall get over the division of tribalism and politics," Okea stated.
