Tooro’s Prince David Kijanangoma Araali dead
According to Rwakatale, Kijanangoma died on Tuesday (September 15) at 6:12 am at Uganda Cancer Institute, where he lost the cancer battle.

The assistant Omusuuga of Tooro Kingdom, Kato Rwakatale, has confirmed the passing of Tooro’s Prince David Kijanangoma Araali.
According to Rwakatale, Kijanangoma died on Tuesday (September 15) at 6:12 am at Uganda Cancer Institute, where he lost the cancer battle.
“He has been ill for a long period of time; may his soul rest in eternal peace,” Rwakatale said.
Prince David Kiijanangoma is an elder brother to the new King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
He was born to the late Christopher Kiijanangoma on December 16, 1970, and is a grandson of King Sir George Rukidi III.
He gained prominence in Tooro succession politics when he openly criticised King Oyo’s reign and declared his own ambitions to claim the throne to reform kingdom structures.
Prince Kijanangoma’s demise comes 16 days after the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who also died of cancer. Oyo succumbed to cancer of the brain (angiosarcoma).
Oyo died on September 27, 2026, at the age of 34 years in a US hospital. The death of Oyo came hardly a week after the death of the King’s cousin, Beth Abwooli, who also died of cancer.

Attempted overthrow
In early March 2015, Kijanangoma announced that he had overthrown King Oyo.
Kijanangoma said he had decided on this coup because his cousin, Oyo, had allegedly abdicated his duties as king. He argued that Oyo was always an absentee king who lived in Buganda Kingdom and would only go to Toro as a visitor.
Then, Kijanangoma said that when a king fails to perform his duties, his brothers are entitled to challenge him for the throne.
He said this had happened when Tooro’s second king, Kazana Ruhaga, spent most of his time in bed and failed to attend to his duties, which prompted his brother Nyaika to depose him.
