Tooro King Edward Nyabongo has reappointed Calvin Armstrong Rwomire as prime minister of the Tooro Kingdom and retained Charles Kamurasi Akiiki as Omusuuga.
The appointment was announced by the kingdom’s principal secretary, Paul Nyakana Businge, at Karuziika Palace on Monday (October 5).
Nyakana said Rwomire had been selected to lead the kingdom’s executive arm and advise the King on matters concerning the development and administration of Tooro.
“His majesty the king has appointed Calvin Armstrong Rwomire to the position of acting Muhikyirwa to facilitate the transition for six months,” Nyakana said.
Rwomire previously served as prime minister of Tooro after his appointment by the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The king also reappointed Charles Kamurasi Akiiki to continue serving as Omusuuga, with Bernard Rwakatare appointed as his deputy.
Nyakana said the prime minister would be supported by an 11-member advisory committee comprising professionals and former government officials.
The committee members are Elisa Kakyomya, businessman Chris Kaijuka, former kingdom prime minister Bernard Tungako, Isiah Mayombo, former gender and social development minister Peace Mutuuzo, former Kyegegwa woman MP Flavia Kabahenda, Binta Kasojo, Abdallah Mwangalija, former attorney general William Byaruhanga, former Mwenge South MP and former Karamoja affairs minister Aston Kajara, and Monica Rubombora.
“The prime minister will work with a committee of 11 people which will be responsible for advising the Prime Minister on different matters,” Nyakana said.
The reappointment comes days after Edward Nyabongo was enthroned as the new Omukama of Tooro, following the death of King Oyo in September.
Rwomire’s return to the kingdom’s leadership is expected to provide continuity in the administration of Tooro as the new king begins his reign.
Nyakana said the new administration would work with different stakeholders to advance the interests of the kingdom and its people.
