National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General Richard Todwong has been elected vice-chairperson of the Council of African Political Parties (CAPP), giving Uganda representation in the continental organisation's executive leadership.
Todwong was elected alongside Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, Secretary General of Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), to represent East African political parties.
The election took place during the African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where political parties from across the continent gathered to discuss cooperation, regional integration and Africa's political and economic transformation.

Announcing his election, Todwong said he was honoured by the responsibility, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation among political organisations beyond national borders.
He said the continent's aspirations required political leaders and institutions to work towards a united, peaceful and prosperous Africa.
Todwong also highlighted the importance of stronger markets, expanded intra-African trade and people-to-people connections, saying Africa's future depended on greater unity and cooperation.
On the sidelines of the summit, Todwong held a bilateral meeting with a CCM delegation led by its Deputy Secretary General, Aggrey D. Mwanri.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the NRM and CCM, particularly in party building, organisational development, institutional cooperation and sharing experiences.
Todwong said the two parties had reaffirmed their commitment to closer relations, adding that a united and integrated Africa required stronger partnerships, continuous dialogue and collaboration among political institutions.
The summit brought together political leaders, heads of political parties and policymakers from across Africa to discuss governance, economic transformation, regional integration and the role of political organisations in advancing development.
Todwong's election places Uganda among the countries represented in the continental organisation's executive leadership and provides an opportunity for the NRM to participate in broader engagements on political cooperation and Africa's development agenda.
