Three warders injured, two guns stolen in foiled Kyegegwa prison attack

“At around 1:00 a.m., unknown assailants attempted to break into Kyegegwa Government Prison and attacked three officers deployed for the night shift as sentries. Two guns registered as UG PRI 563615124 and UG Pol 565828358, each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, were lost to the attackers,” Baine said.


Baine revealed that the injured officers, Sergeant Warder Titus Kalisa, Wardress Susan Margaret Nakuya and Joshua Odongo, were rushed to Kyegegwa General Hospital for treatment.

“No prisoner escaped during the attack. Sister security agencies were immediately called in, and investigations are underway. Efforts to apprehend the assailants and recover the stolen guns are in full gear,” Baine added.

Uganda prisons appealed to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the assailants, or recovery of the guns, to call toll-free line 0800144144 or report to the nearest police station.

This will not be the first time a prison has been attacked. In December 2005, armed men attacked Kaberamaido Government Prison, in Kaberamaido district, abducting 15 inmates, stealing 30,000 Ugandan shillings, and taking farm tools.

Police later arrested a suspect identified as Richard Enyenu, who confessed to leading the raid, while the local prison warden faced an investigation for negligence.
