TORORO - Police in Tororo District are hunting for three suspects who allegedly escaped from lawful custody after breaking out of the cells at Osukuru Police Station.
The suspects have been identified as Julius Odoi, 30, a driver from Lugazi Town Council in Bukedea District; John Ekirapa, a resident of Abwanget Cell, Tororo District; and Wyclif Cherop, a resident of Osukuru Ward, Tororo District.
The trio reportedly escaped during the night of August 16, 2026, at an unknown time.
According to police, the suspects broke and removed iron bars from a ventilator at the police cells before squeezing their way out.
The escape was reported by Sgt. William Okadapau, a police officer attached to Osukuru Police Station.
A case of escape from lawful custody was registered at Osukuru Police Station under SD Reference 04/16/08/2026.
Police detectives and other officers visited and documented the scene, while statements were recorded from relevant witnesses.
Police have also taken action against officers who were on duty at the time of the escape as investigations continue.
The suspects were being held on separate charges before their escape. Odoi was facing a charge of stealing a motor vehicle, Ekirapa was facing criminal trespass charges, while Cherop had been arrested over an alleged theft.
Police said efforts to re-arrest the three suspects are ongoing.
Members of the public have been urged to provide information that could help police locate the suspects.
