Police in Kole District are investigating the sudden deaths of three men who were buried alive in a gravel quarry accident on April 25, 2025.

Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson, said the tragic incident occurred at around 1:00 pm in Akaidebe cell, Akwirididi ward, Aboke town council.

The deceased have been identified as Ambrose Dengo, 24, a casual worker; Isaac Ojok, 23, also a casual worker; and Isaac Akaa, 24, a student. All were residents of Akaidebe B Cell, Akwirididi Ward, in Aboke town council.

“It is alleged that while the three were working in a gravel quarry, the pit suddenly collapsed, burying them alive,” Okema stated. “Despite warnings issued earlier when cracks were observed at the site, the deceased reportedly continued excavating until the tragic collapse.”

According to Police, the incident was first reported by Charles Ogwang, a 91-year-old resident of Akaidebe cell.

A joint emergency response was quickly organised involving the district police commander (DPC) of Kole, police officers, the chairperson LC5 of Kole district, the area Member of Parliament, the woman MP, and other local leaders, who all rushed to the scene to assist.

The bodies were retrieved and later taken to Aboke Health Centre IV for post-mortem examinations.

Okema said a case of sudden death was registered at Aboke Sub-County Police Station and Kole Central Police Station. The scene was visited by the DPC of Kole, the scene of crime officer, and a team from the homicide squad. Relevant witness statements have been recorded as part of ongoing inquiries.

He also noted that a similar fatal incident had previously been registered in Kole district.

“We advise and encourage community members to avoid engaging in risky jobs without observing safety precautions, as they try to earn a living at the expense of their lives,” Okema emphasised.
