Three arrested over impersonation of Uganda police boss on social media

According to investigations, the trio allegedly created and operated fake social media accounts in the name of the IGP, targeting police officers and unsuspecting members of the public for financial gain.

Police at Jinja Road are holding three suspects accused of impersonating the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, on social media platforms to extort money.

The suspects have been identified as Uthmaan Ariho Abubakar, Fayim Bukenya, and Dalton Kaweesi. They were arrested on March 24, 2026, following intelligence-led operations.

According to investigations, the trio allegedly created and operated fake social media accounts in the name of the IGP, targeting police officers and unsuspecting members of the public for financial gain.

A case of personation has since been registered, and a search of their premises led to the recovery of electronic devices and documents suspected of being used in the commission of the crime.

Racheal Kawala, the spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the three suspects are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station as inquiries continue.

Investigations include establishing the extent of the suspects’ activities and identifying any possible accomplices.
