As many as 30 Members of Parliament and 20 Parliament officials have reportedly been red-flagged and barred from leaving the country as the probe continues.

Corruption allegations against the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among and other officials at Parliament should be fully investigated and the culprits brought to book as per the law, outgoing regional affairs state minister John Mulimba has said.

He told reporters in Kampala on Wednesday (May 20) that Ugandans want to see real outcomes through investigations: arrests and prosecutions, recovery of stolen resources, and convictions where wrongdoing is established.

Speaking at the Sheraton Hotel, Mulimba was responding to the ongoing corruption allegations probe involving Among and others in Parliament.

He applauded President Yoweri Museveni and Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the UPDF leadership for taking bold action against corruption, particularly within Parliament, which is supposed to be the temple of democracy and integrity.

“It’s my appeal that the extraordinary measures taken by President Museveni and the CDF Muhoozi to crack down on corruption should not be business as usual. My appeal is that this should not just be done the way it has always been done."

Speaking in his capacity as a private and a concerned citizen, Mulimba said: "I am here to represent many Ugandans and to add my voice to the millions of Ugandans out there calling upon both the CDF and the President to go all the way and ensure that this crackdown reaches its logical conclusion, so that we can have constructive punishment for those who have committed wrongdoing."

The intensified investigations are into alleged corruption and abuse of office.

'Immense harm'

Since last Saturday, security agencies have conducted searches at the residences of Among in Kampala and Wakiso district, recovering various assets to aid investigations, including vehicles.

As many as 30 Members of Parliament and 20 Parliament officials have reportedly been red-flagged and barred from leaving the country as the probe continues.

On Tuesday, it was not business as usual at Parliament as detectives and forensic auditors sealed off the office of Among and launched an extensive search operation linked to the ongoing investigations.

Conducted under tight security, the dramatic operation marked a major escalation in investigations targeting Among and some of her close associates.

“I think Ugandans would like to see a tangible outcome where offenders are taken to courts of law and given the punishment they deserve according to the law," said Mulimba.

"Ugandans are really suffering. For those who may not know, this primitive accumulation of wealth by a few individuals, with impunity, has caused immense harm to Ugandans.

Mulimba also appealed to President Museveni to extend the investigations to the NRM secretariat, Police and Judiciary.

On Tuesday, CDF Kainerugaba said on social platform X that the ongoing campaign against corruption, dubbed 'Operation Maliza Ufisadi', has only just started.

"Already, we have retrieved quite a lot of the people's money and property. Everything will be returned to the Treasury," he said, adding that he would release a partial report soon.

"I advise all government officials to co-operate fully with the security."
