Landowners in the Teso sub-region have been urged to be cautious when allowing people to occupy their land to avoid future disputes.
Lilian Omurangi, an attorney with Redeem International, warned that under Ugandan law, continuous occupation of land for 12 years can lead to the acquisition of ownership rights if not challenged.
She advised landowners to put clear written agreements in place when allowing tenants or relatives to stay on their property.
The message was delivered during a meeting organised by Redeem International at the Arabaka Pentecostal Assemblies of God Church in Soroti district.
Rose Atim Arimo, the regional child and family protection officer for the East Kyoga police region, urged communities to seek legal guidance early, warning that many land conflicts arise from ignorance of the law.
Soroti resident district commissioner Imran Muluga said his office handles about 20 land-related cases monthly, calling for stronger community education on inheritance and land rights.
Redeem International continues to work with law enforcement to protect widows and orphans from land grabbing in the region.
