Parliament has called for swift action to prevent further tragedies in the wake of the Bulambuli landslides that claimed 28 lives earlier this month.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, presiding over the Thursday plenary session, expressed deep concern over the recurring devastation caused by such disasters.
“On behalf of Parliament and on my own behalf, I want to express our sincere condolences to the families who lost their dear ones. The people of Bulambuli and the country at large. I urge the Rt Hon. Prime Minister (Robinah Nabbanja) to fast-track the relocation and I saw her in the field doing hard work. I urge her to fast track the relocation of the affected people so that we don’t lose more,” Tayebwa implored.
“I want to add a voice that the leaders from the affected areas should give her the necessary support to ensure that this doesn’t happen again by taking preventive measures,” he added.
Dr Nabwiiso eulogised
During the same sitting, Tayebwa also paid tribute to Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) stalwart Dr Frank Nabwiso who passed away on Saturday, December 14 this year.
Nabwiso represented Kagoma County in the Seventh Parliament.
The Ruhinda North lawmaker who himself was an FDC member at one point before switching to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), said Nabwiiso will be remembered for his immense contributions to politics, education and the development of the country at large.
“I have received a copy of the motion to pay respect to the late from the Rt Hon. Prime Minister and with time I will be according it space on the order paper. So that we can pay a befitting tribute to that gallant son and I want to thank Government for considering that motion. It is important,” Tayebwa stated.
During this space when Parliament had been adjourned, two lawmakers lost their fathers.
Ibrahim Semujju Nganda (Kira Municipality, FDC) lost his father Hajj Ali Nkwanga Nganda who passed on December 12 this year with the other one being the father to Pauline Kyaka (Lyantonde district, NRM).
EALA Games
On a light note, Deputy Speaker Tayebwa commended Kenya for the wonderful hospitality during the 14th Edition of the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games.
“They prepared very well, and we were well hosted in Mombasa. And I want to thank the staff of Parliament who gave us all the support we needed. Once we finish this session, colleagues, you are all invited to the annual end-of-year party today December 19, 2024, in the parking. We held prayers at the same place, today morning and the Archbishop declared it a holy ground and we appointed Hon. Esenu, Robinah, and Bahati to monitor those who will not dance in a prayerful manner,” he joked.
Adding that they should dance appropriately to avoid distorting the holy ground.
