Six men suspected to be motorcycle thieves have been arrested by Police during an operation in the areas of Lungujja, Kosovo, Mutundwe, and Nakawuka Road in Kampala.

Police said their preliminary findings indicated that the suspects pose as customers with the intention of robbing motorcycle riders of their bikes.

The "disruptive operation" conducted on Thursday (December 11) specifically targeted motorcycle thieves.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the action followed a public outcry over a surge in motorcycle robberies in the targeted areas.

Nateete Police, who conducted the crackdown, arrested suspects Denis Mwesigwa, Erias Washington, Samuel Niwugu, Derrick Nasasira, Medy Mbabali, and Sam Nsereko.

Two motorcycles (UEW 612H and UMA 471AG) were recovered, along with other exhibits.

"The arrested individuals are currently being held at Lungujja and Wakaliga Police Stations. A case of aggravated robbery has been opened, and investigations are ongoing," said Kawala.

Relatedly, Police said they had detained a one Hakim Mugabi, alias “Younger” at the Central Police Station in Kampala, over pick-pocketing.

Police said he is "a well-known pickpocket operating along Luwum Street".

Mugabi was arrested during an operation conducted around the Mutaasa Kafeero area on Friday (December 12) at around midday.

"Our operations continue, especially as we enter the festive season, in a bid to combat crime," said Kawala.
