The Supreme Court in Kampala is on Thursday (April 3) scheduled to hear several cases, including the appeal of two individuals convicted of murdering businessman Eriya Bugembe Ssebunya, alias Kasiwukira.

In October 2016, Sandra Nakungu and Police officer, Ashraf Jaden, were sentenced to 22 years in prison by High Court Judge Wilson Masalu Musene (now deceased), who found them guilty of Kasiwukira's murder

Meanwhile, Kasiwukira’s widow, Sarah Nabikolo, was acquitted of murder due to lack of evidence linking her to the crime.

Nakungu and Jaden appealed against the conviction and sentence, but a panel of justices - Elizabeth Musoke (now Supreme Court judge), Hellen Obura, and Ezekiel Muhanguzi, upheld the judgment.

According to court documents, on October 17, 2014, Kasiwukira was murdered at about 6:00am near his home in Muyenga diplomatic zone. He was knocked down by a speeding car as he jogged in the neighbourhood.

The criminal appeals will be handled by a panel of five Supreme Court justices. The justices include Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza, Percy Tuhaise, Mike Chibita, Stephen Musota, and Monica Kalyegira Mugenyi.

The five together with justices Catherine Bamugemereire and Christopher Izama Madrama have completed 18 criminal appeals since Monday, March 31, 2025.

One of the appellants, Mutema Tegike Muzamiru, is seeking to have the court overturn his murder conviction and death sentence.

According to court documents, Muzamiru and his wife, a one Nabwire, were involved in a dispute over the paternity of their 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Doreen Mutunda. When their relatives intervened, Nabwire escaped, and Muzamiru directed his anger towards the baby, beating her to death.
