MAKERERE – The Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Marksons Oboth, has re-echoed his stance to stamp out corruption in the August house so that it can perform its oversight role.
"Zero tolerance for corruption. The first thing I have done is to return the sh24.bn that was allocated to the Speaker to the committees, and no committee shall lack money to do their mandate. What I need is a work plan that is costed, period,” said Oboth.
Oboth made the remarks on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, during the thanksgiving dinner for Robinah Nabbanja, who was celebrating her reappointment as the Prime Minister of Uganda.
The function took place at Nabbanja's residence at Makerere Kavule in Kampala.
Oboth, as the chief guest, assured the gathering and the entire country that he will do a factory default reset of Parliament by empowering the committees to do their work.
He said that the office of the Speaker does not need to have a corporate social responsibility budget that can be left to other organisations.
Oboth, according to a release from the Office of the Prime Minister, emphasised that Parliament must be accountable first if it is to hold government officials accountable.
“There is no way we can hold others accountable when we are not accountable. Parliament is the only place where accountability makes sense, so I ask members of Parliament to cooperate with me,” said Oboth.
He promised to ensure the parliamentary commission does its work and is revived.
The Speaker expressed concern about the delayed completion of the Parliamentary chambers, yet funds are available.
“In this year’s budget, there is sh22bn for construction, but money is lying idle in the Bank of Uganda. How can you build the chambers since 2014 to date?” wondered Oboth.
Prime Minister Nabbanja expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for the "trust and confidence" he showed in her reappointment.
The chairperson of Bunyoro Parliamentary Caucus, Dr Emily Kugonza, on behalf of the Members of Parliament from Bunyoro, lauded President Museveni for re-appointing Nabbanja as the Prime Minister of Uganda.
The dinner was graced by the deputy head of public service in charge of service delivery, Jane Kyarisiima Mwesiga, the permanent secretary Julius Victor Nkeramihigo, the chairperson of the National Planning Authority (NPA), Dr Pamela Mbabazi, dozens of MPs and the LCV chairperson Wakiso Ian Kyeyune, among other dignitaries.
Local artists Silver Kyagulanyi and Fred Ssebale entertained the guests.
