Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has urged the 5th Assembly of the African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (AFROPAC) in Kampala to work collaboratively in developing effective strategies for combating illicit financial flows.
She made the call on March 17, 2025, while officially opening the conference at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala city.
The conference is being held under the theme: Strengthening Legislative Action to Combat Illicit Financial Flows & Foster Public Financial Resilience.
“These flows appear in our countries through various forms of corruption, smuggling, tax evasion, human trafficking, drug trade and aggressive transfer pricing, among others,” she said shortly after opening the conference.
“Such financial crimes undermine revenue collection, which is crucial for financing our countries’ development goals and ensuring quality service delivery to our citizens,” Among, who is also the Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament, added.
AFROPAC chairperson and Busiro East MP Medard Sseggona said the African public accounts body has formed a coalition with the African Union (AU) in curbing illicit financial flows, saying that the fight against the vice requires a united front.
Sseggona doubles as the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Uganda’s central government.
AFROPAC, which comprises PAC from various African legislatures, was established in September 2013 in Arusha, Tanzania.
It is a network of PACs and similar committees from AU member states.
