Soroti Grade One Magistrate Kasujja Kibirige Apollo on Wednesday, April 30, sentenced a 22-year-old girl, Kevin Apio, to one year in prison after she was found guilty of attempting to commit suicide.
In addition to the jail sentence, Kasujja ruled that Kevin Apio, a resident of Orwadai cell of Orwadai ward in Soroti city, should attend counselling lessons.
Apio was arrested on March 5, after she was rescued from a locked house where she had tried to hang herself.
The court heard that Apio got frustrated following a quarrel with her elder brother.
The cause of the quarrel was not immediately established.
Appearing before Kasujja, Apio pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness, saying she had changed her mind about killing herself.
Nevertheless, state prosecutor Doreen Adero protested to Apio's request, saying she should be jailed so that she can change her attitude and serve as a lesson to the would-be offenders.
