Rev. Fr Romanus Etwap, the parish priest of Immaculate Conception Cathedral Catholic Church in Soroti, has died following a road crash on the Soroti-Mbale highway.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11 pm on September 2, 2026, shortly after Fr Etwap had refuelled his vehicle at Hass Petrol Station.
Preliminary information indicates that his vehicle collided with a Fuso truck.
Fr Etwap’s body was taken to the mortuary at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.
At the time of his death, Fr Etwap was taking part in the National Charismatic Renewal Conference at St Patrick’s Catholic Parish in Madera, Soroti.
The conference started on August 29, 2026, with the arrival of participants and was officially opened by the Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese, Rt Rev. Dr Joseph Eciru Oliach.
In his message during the opening, Bishop Eciru urged Christians to add value to the Church by using the gifts and talents that God has given them.
The conference was on its third day when thousands of Christians gathered at St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish in Madera for the annual renewal programme.
Fr Etwap was also undertaking major development projects at Immaculate Conception Cathedral at the time of his death.
He was expected to celebrate his priestly jubilee in August 2027, marking a significant milestone in his priestly ministry.
The circumstances surrounding the deadly incident are not yet fully clear, and further details are expected from police and church authorities.
Fr Etwap’s death has come as a shock to the Catholic community in Soroti, where he served as parish priest of the cathedral.
