Soroti High Court has sentenced Eshepu Richard to 38 years in prison for the murder of his 16-year-old son, Ivan Oluka, in Kaberamaido district.

While delivering the sentence, Justice Boniface Wamala noted that the accused, as a parent, had a duty to protect his child, but instead committed an unlawful and inhumane act.

Prosecution proved that on July 18, 2021, at Ajikdak village, Eshepu lured his son to the lake, strangled him, and dumped the body in the water, later claiming that crocodiles had eaten the boy.

A medical report presented in court revealed injuries to the victim’s spinal cord and neck, consistent with strangulation.

The court also heard that Eshepu had ongoing domestic wrangles with his son and had previously threatened to kill him, as reported by the boy’s mother.

During mitigation, the convict pleaded for leniency, claiming he had been affected by COVID-19, but the judge dismissed the plea as an attempt to avoid justice.
