Six people have died in a tragic road accident in Gomba district after the driver of a commuter taxi they were travelling in lost control and swerved off the road.
The accident occurred on Saturday, May 9, at Lumanyo Maddu village along the tarmac road from Mpigi to Sembabule after a commuter taxi "drone" reportedly veered off the road and crashed.
The accident happened at around 5:00 am, killing six people on the spot, while six others with critical injuries were admitted to Maddu Health Centre IV and Gombe hospital in Butambala district.
Some of the deceased have been identified as: George Kaleere, Scovia Kimanda, Hellen Turyahabwe, Livingstone Mujuuli, Hope Niwomurungi, all residents of Kyentebe village, Mijwaala parish, in Ssembabule district.
One male adult killed in the same crash has yet to be identified.
Disan Katiita, a bereaved relative, said the victims had hired a taxi to travel to Luweero for a friend's wedding before the incident happened.
Preliminary information indicates the taxi driver was speeding and was unfamiliar with the route.
The wreckage of the taxi remains at Kajumiro police station in Maddu sub-county, Gomba, while the dead were conveyed to Gombe hospital mortuary.
