Six children injured as Bulambuli floods ravage villages

BULAMBULI - The Uganda Red Cross (URC) on Friday, April 5, 2024, issued an alert after several areas in Bulambuli District in Bugisu sub-region experienced heavy floods.

“Six children were injured yesterday in incidents where they were hit by debris as houses collapsed during heavy rains. The injured victims were still admitted and referred to Bunambutye Resettlement Health Centre III at the time this report was filed on Friday (April 4, 2024) evening.

URC spokesperson Irene Nakasiita said many areas in Bulambuli district had registered heavy rains and experienced heavy flooding.



“The affected areas include Bumufuni Sub-County, Bumwangu parish, Bubulo village. Our volunteers on ground have responded with immediate lifesaving support to the affected people such as the elderly, and children, to move out of flooded areas,” she said in a public statement.

She reported that response teams have since been deployed to replace embankments on River Manafwa to prevent water from further spreading into people's houses.

“The response team is conducting assessments together with the district leadership to extend meaningful support to the displaced families,” she added.

On Wednesday several roads and villages in Butaleja District were also cut off following the heavy rains which led to flooding in the area.

Nakasiita said from information from the Uganda Meteorological Authority, that April will receive more rainfall compared to March and May.
