The Police have asked a city school to avail the list of all students that went for the field trip following a viral video in which students were dancing on board a bus, the force's spokesperson, Fred Enanga, has revealed.

The viral video which cause a stir was captured during traffic and showed students getting lap dances from their peers inside a school bus belonging to Midland High School.

“Such incident practices and behaviours have a potential of impairing morals of other students, promoting acts of gross indiscipline in schools and our society,” Enanga said in a statement.

“Right now, the big question is how did the incident occur on a school bus, without the school staff and driver knowing has been the talking point for many shocked parents, guardians, educationists and the general public,” the statement added in which Enanga also noted that a task team headed by the Commissioner, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Department had commenced inquiries.

Midland High School has since spoken out against the incident and distanced itself from the students and their actions, saying Lubiri High School in Mengo hired the bus for a trip to Jinja.

Below is Enanga’s statement in full:

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has commenced inquiries into a viral video of students who were caught on camera performing erotic lap dances and other inappropriate sexual behaviours while being transported in a bus.

We have since established that on the 9.06.2022, the Management of Lubiri High School hired a school bus from MIDLAND High School, to transport a group of students for an Agricultural show in Jinja.  It is during the trip that some students were caught on camera getting naughty, including very appropriate sexual behaviour, by male and female students, who had paired up.  Such incident practices and behaviours have a potential of impairing morals of other students, promoting acts of gross indiscipline in schools and our society.

The task team headed by the Commissioner, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Department in close coordination with the Child and Family Protection Unit from Police Headquarters has commenced inquiries which shall guide on the most appropriate action to be taken.

Right now, the big question is how did the incident occur on a school bus, without the school staff and driver knowing has been the talking point for many shocked parents, guardians, educationists and the general public.

As inquiries continue we wish to remind all school Administrators that all safety concerns of students while in school or off campus activities like sports, clubs, study tours etc. fail on the shoulders of the school management.  At the same time, we also wish to remind students that they also have a duty or are expected to behave while at school.  The purpose of taking them to school is to study according to the school curriculum and not behaving in such inappropriate manners.

Therefore, we are going to establish if there was a teacher or staff member who escorted or was supposed to escort the students?  And whether the protocols on safety and security of students was followed? Who organized the field tour and list of students? Whether any students used their power to exploit other students while on the bus? And whether any students were victimized by other exploitative students? Etc.

However, as witnessed from the viral video any form of laxity on supervision of students is disgraceful and a complete violation of the trust parents give to teachers and schools.  Therefore, we urge all schools to as a MUSR activate their supervision plans across all learning environments within the school and in external learning environments.
