Incoming Lions Club of Kampala East president-elect Susan Muhumuza Nyatia, a seasoned Human Resource Management and Development Professional, has pledged to expand community health camps and environmental conservation initiatives across Uganda.

Speaking on Friday at Kampala Club Swimming Pool, during a dinner held ahead of assuming office as Lions Club of Kampala East President, Muhumuza said increasing access to free health services will be one of her key priorities.

She noted that many Ugandans, particularly in rural and underserved communities, still struggle to access basic healthcare, making outreach health camps an effective way to bridge the gap.

"Our commitment is to bring health services closer to the people. Through more medical camps, we want to provide free screening, early diagnosis and health education so that communities can live healthier lives," she said.

The planned health camps will offer services such as eye screening, diabetes testing, blood pressure checks and general medical consultations.

Lions Clubs are internationally recognised for their work in preventing blindness, promoting diabetes awareness and supporting vulnerable communities through humanitarian service.

Muhumuza also identified environmental conservation as another major pillar of her leadership, promising to mobilise members and partners to plant thousands of trees in schools, communities and degraded areas.

She said tree planting is not only essential in mitigating the effects of climate change but also in preserving Uganda's biodiversity for future generations.

"Every tree planted is an investment in a healthier environment. We want to encourage communities, especially young people, to take an active role in conserving nature," she said.

The pledge builds on ongoing Lions environmental initiatives, which have seen clubs across Uganda organise tree-planting campaigns in partnership with schools, local authorities and conservation organisations.

Muhumuza emphasised that service remains at the heart of Lionism and called upon members to continue volunteering their time, skills and resources to transform lives.

She said collaboration with government agencies like the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), health institutions, development partners and local communities will be crucial in expanding the impact of the organisation’s programmes.

Beyond health and environmental conservation, she said Lions will continue supporting initiatives aimed at fighting hunger, empowering youth and responding to humanitarian needs wherever they arise.

"As Lions, we believe that service changes lives. Together, we can build healthier communities, protect our environment and create lasting hope for those who need it most," Muhumuza said.

On his part, James Musinguzi, the executive director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, commended Muhumuza for accepting to take on the mantle to serve beyond self.

“Susan has been exemplary in her daily duties at UWA, I am confident you people have made the right choice. Let’s render her the necessary support,” Musinguzi stated.

Relatedly, newly elected Leo President-Elect Daniella Kabahamba called on young people across Uganda to embrace volunteerism and community service, saying youth have the energy and innovation needed to create lasting change.

Kabahamba said her leadership will focus on empowering Leo members to undertake impactful projects in health, education, environmental conservation and youth development.

"The strength of the Leo movement lies in the passion and commitment of young people who are willing to serve their communities. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in people's lives," she said.
