The search for a fisherman who drowned in Lake Victoria in Buikwe District is underway, a day after his colleague’s body was recovered from the lake.
Benjamin Onyait, a fisherman and resident of Kiyindi Town Council, is still missing after the small boat he was using while fishing capsized in strong waves at Kabugoga Buyomba Landing Site in Ggoli Ward, Kiyindi, on August 11 at about 3:30pm.
The boat was carrying Onyait and Rogers Fuwa, a boda boda rider and fellow resident of Kiyindi Town Council, when it capsized.
Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa Region Police spokesperson, said Fuwa’s body was recovered from the waters on August 12, while efforts to locate Onyait are continuing.
“Search efforts are underway to recover the missing body of Onyait,” Butoto said.
Police said the two were fishing using a small boat, commonly known as “bao tatu”, when strong waves hit it, causing it to capsize.
Butoto said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Three-year old drowns
Meanwhile, police in Busia District are investigating the suspected drowning of a three-year-old girl in a community water pond in Buyuni Village, Dabani sub-county.
Police said the two were fishing using a small boat, commonly known as “bao tatu”, when strong waves hit it, causing it to capsize.
Butoto said investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Meanwhile, police in Busia District are investigating the suspected drowning of a three-year-old girl in a community water pond in Buyuni Village, Dabani sub-county.
Brenda Tebesigwa, a daughter of Micheal Oguttu and Susan Taaka, drowned on August 9, 2026, at about 11:00am while fetching water with her two brothers, aged eight and 10 years.
According to police, Tebesigwa accidentally slipped into the approximately five-foot-deep pond. Her brothers raised an alarm, attracting their mother, but she was found already dead.
The body was retrieved by relatives, and the matter was reported to police under reference number CRB739/2026.
Police visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from witnesses and recovered a small yellow jerrycan believed to have been used by the child.
Police said no external injuries were found on the body. The pond, located about 50 metres from the family home, is a community water collection point.
The body was handed over to the relatives for burial after they declined a postmortem.
