A Martyrs Day holiday turned tragic for Joseph Angai, 48, a teacher at Soroti Senior Secondary School, after he was knocked dead by a speeding vehicle along the Soroti–Lira Highway.
Angai, who had used the public holiday to visit his family, met his death at about 11:20am on June 3, 2026, at Aoya B village, Abalang parish, Oriamo subcounty in Kaberamaido district.
According to a police report issued by the East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, Ibrahim Saiga, the accident involved a Toyota Wish registration number UBD 512A, which was being driven by Paul Dembi, a resident of Mbale district.
"The accident involved a motor vehicle, registration number UBD 512A, a Toyota Wish, which was being driven by Paul Dembi, a resident of Mbale district. The vehicle was travelling from Soroti towards Lira when it knocked a pedal cyclist," the police report stated.
Saiga said the driver was arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
"We urge all road users to exercise maximum caution, observe traffic regulations, and respect the rights of other road users, especially vulnerable groups such as cyclists and pedestrians," Saiga advised.
News of Angai’s death shocked the leadership and staff of Soroti Senior Secondary School, who had interacted with him only hours before the fatal crash.
"We were together yesterday, but this morning a friend called us with the sad news of his death in a road accident. It's unbelievable," the school’s head teacher, Wilfred Oluka Okeriau, told New Vision.
Oluka described Angai as a dedicated teacher who taught Entrepreneurship at the school.
Angai’s death comes barely five days after another road crash claimed the life of John Okedi, 34, a teacher at Awoja Primary School in Soroti district. Okedi was knocked dead by a speeding vehicle and was laid to rest on Wednesday, June 3, at his ancestral home in Atiira, Serere district.
Police conveyed Angai’s body to Kaberamaido Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination. By press time, the postmortem report had not yet been released.
Angai, a native of Kaberamaido District, leaves behind a grieving family, colleagues, former students and friends who are struggling to come to terms with his sudden death.
