Combined efforts of security agencies have led to the arrest of the suspected prime suspect and accomplices in the brutal murder of a fuel station manager in Kireka, Kira municipality, Wakiso district.

According to a statement issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango on Wednesday (October 23, 2024), the wanted man in the murder of Agnes Nantongo, the former manager of at African Oil Petrol Station, was finally apprehended.

Nantongo was on September 28, 2024, brutally murdered and her body dumped by the roadside in Kamuli A zone, Kireka on the Northern Bypass. She had last been seen by workmates leaving the office at about 7:00 pm and her body was discovered by a passerby the following morning at about 8:00 am, according to the Police.

Onyango identified the prime suspect as Edward Kaweesa, who was arrested alongside Jimmy Serunjoji, Robert Mwanje, Ali Muteesa, Juma Busulwa and Pius Mugambe who are said to have committed the offence together. Onyango said the suspects were arrested on Monday, October 21, 2024, at Dube Parking Yard.

“The breakthrough came after analysing Kaweesa's call data,” Onyango said in a statement, adding that during the arrest, Kaweesa attempted to flee but was shot at and injured in the leg.

During the search, the security team recovered two motorcycles, registration numbers UFQ 934K and UFB 788Z. Other items seized included 174 SIM cards of various networks, suspected to have been used in committing various crimes.

Onyango said the recovered SIM cards are believed to be linked to robbery and murder victims of the prime suspect and his accomplices. The Police were yet to reveal the motive of the murder.

While addressing mourners at the burial of Nantongo at Kasengejje in Wakiso district on September 30, 2024, the fuel station operations manager, Wycliff Kagina, vowed that they were working closely with the Police and other sister agencies to ensure that she gets justice.

It was established from a nearby CCTV footage that when she left office, Nantongo did not board a taxi as she used to do but continued walking towards the Northern Bypass. However, the footage did not show the point where her body was found or anyone following her. Initial reports indicated that she could have been hit by a brick hurled at her by unknown people.

Kagina said Nantongo’s mobile phone was taken by the killers. She was described by relatives as a pillar and a unifier in the family. She was a mother of two.
