On Thursday, Parliament’s Appointments Committee vetted and, according to sources, approved Josephine Okui Okwakol Ossiya's reappointment as a member of the Board of Directors of Bank of Uganda.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa tweeted on Thursday that the committee had vetted Okui.

“I chaired Parliament's Committee on Appointments to vet the presidential nominee for the BoU board, Okui, this morning. The committee will communicate its decision to the appointing authority.”

Sources told New Vision that Okui got the nod from the committee, who will send their report to President Yoweri Museveni.

In a letter to the Speaker of Parliament dated June 18, 2023, Museveni reappointed Okui.

"In exercise of powers vested in the President by Article 161 (3) (a) of the 1995 Constitution, I have re-appointed Okui as a member of the Board of Directors of BoU. I hereby submit her name and curriculum vitae to Parliament for approval," he wrote.

The bank's board is responsible for overall management of Uganda's top financial institution. The members are appointed by the President with the approval of Parliament.

The board is composed of the governor and chairperson, deputy governor, deputy chairperson and no more than five other members.

A member of the board holds office for a term of five years but is eligible for reappointment.

The term of the previous board, which consisted of Judy Obitre-Gama, James Kahoza, Dr. William Kalema and Okui expired early this year. Its former chairman and governor was the late Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile.

The board has only two members: finance ministry permanent secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, Ramadhan Ggoobi, and deputy governor of Bank of Uganda Dr Michael Atingi-Ego.

Okui now joins Japheth Kato, Rosemary Kisembo and Didas Nkurunziza, who were vetted on April 12, 2023. The board now awaits the appointment of governor to be fully constituted.
