“Part of the problem that you must work on is that of subsistence farming and land fragmentation based on inheritance. This is very dangerous," Museveni said.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Thursday met and held discussions with bishops from Rwenzori dioceses who paid a courtesy call on him at State House, Entebbe.

They were led by Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo, the Bishop of Rwenzori diocese.

During the meeting, the clerics briefed the President on the progress of the preparations for the Church of Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations slated for June 3.

On behalf of the bishops from the Greater Rwenzori sub-region, Kisembo appreciated the government of Uganda's support and partnership with the Church of Uganda.

Museveni pledged to support the Church to ensure that the celebrations are a success.

He also implored religious leaders to mobilize believers to embrace wealth-creation programmes to fight poverty.

The President also pointed out some of the setbacks that maintain some sections of the population in Uganda in perpetual poverty and urged the bishops to help resolve the issue.

“Part of the problem that you must work on is that of subsistence farming and land fragmentation based on inheritance. This is very dangerous," he said.

"The land is disabled because of bad human settlement. Then three, lack of proper enterprise selection. In Kasese for example, coffee and apples could do very well because of the favourable terrain and climate."

The Rwenzori cluster will host this year's Martyrs Day celebrations at the Anglican Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo under the theme “United for sustainable services and growth”.
