KAMPALA - The Military raid on Nation Media Group (NMG) outlets, including NTV and Daily Monitor newspaper, was authorised by President Yoweri Museveni; the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Justine Lumumba, has said.
Addressing the press at the Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Lumumba said, “The events of June 28, 2026, that led to the disruption of operations of NMG were occasioned by a security-led inquiry, instituted by President Museveni.”
Lumumba revealed that the inquiry involves the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF), the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) of the Uganda Police Force, other security agencies and experts.
According to Lumumba, the Government will inform the public once the inquiry is complete.
On Saturday night, security personnel took control of NMG’s premises in Kampala and its broadcast facilities, preventing the printing of the Daily Monitor newspaper and interrupting NTV, as well as other NMG television and radio transmissions.
This was shortly after the Chief of Defence Forces and Special Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on June 27, 2026, said President Museveni had approved the closure.
"President Museveni has approved my plan to close both NTV and Monitor. We are moving immediately!” Kainerugaba said then.
The outlets affected are: NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, Dembe FM, The East African, Ennyanda newspaper and Nation Courier, and the Daily Monitor newspaper.
On Sunday evening, the Uganda Communications Commission said it had noted the circumstances surrounding the shutdown and that consultations with relevant government stakeholders had commenced.
