Ugandan, US-based powerlifter Roy Mubiru got the perfect warm-up ahead of more gruelling contests when he once again topped his category during the Massachusetts State Championships in Peabody on Saturday.

Competing in the heavyweight category Mubiru who weighs 109kgs executed all his lifts in the required time to top his category as he embarked on preparations to compete in more events, this, and next year.

Mubiru competed in the 300kgs Tyre flip which he flipped six times in 26 seconds; carried a 200kg drum for 30 meters on which he loaded 250kgs in 29 seconds, Dumbbell Shoulder Press Hijack of 120kgs which he did four times, 200kg Axle multiple deadlifts which he did ten times in one minute, and the 260kgs Engine Block Lift and Hold which he held for 38 seconds.

“I have embarked on preparations for the Arnold Classic Championships next year, and the World Strongest Man which will be held in Texas in November,” Mubiru said.

“This was like a qualifier to the coming events including the lucrative ‘Nightmare on Central Street’ Strong Man contest on October 28 at the same location where a similar performance will have me winning some money,” Mubiru noted.

He said he plans to donate some of the money which is in the region of sh180m for first place to charity, especially for organisations that cater for children suffering from autism.

“There are parents with such special needs children and we want to create awareness that such children can still be of value to the country if helped and prepared for games like the Special Olympics,”

He said he also has plans to stage competitions in Uganda for such children in the near future in conjunction with several US-based organisations.
