Pope Leo appoints Fr. Katongole advisor Vatican Human Development Dicastery

Ugandan priest, Rev. Fr Emmanuel Katongole, is among the 12 newly appointed consultors to the Vatican Dicastery responsible for promoting Integral Human Development.

A Catholic priest of Kampala Archdiocese ordained in 1987, Fr. Katongole is among the 12 appointed consultors for a five-year term.

His appointment was also announced in Kampala by the Uganda Episcopal Conference on August 19th, which congratulated the newly appointed consultors. 

“On 18 Aug, Pope Leo XIV appointed 12 new Consultors to the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development for a five-year term. Among them is Rev. Emmanuel Katongole, Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame in the United States.”

The Catholic Church has 16 dicasteries, including: Evangelisation,  Doctrine of the Faith, Service of Charity, Eastern Churches, Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Causes of Saints, Bishops and Clergy.

Others are Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, Laity, Family and Life, Promoting Christian Unity, Interreligious Dialogue, Culture and Education, Legislative Texts and Communication.

Katongole's dicastery promotes human dignity, peace, justice, health, and care for creation. It puts the social teachings of the Catholic Church into practice, helping people suffering from poverty, war, illness, and forced migration.

According to Uganda's Episcopal Conference communication, the appointments bring together theologians, priests, religious and lay experts from different parts of the world.

“The chosen consultors, according to UEC, offer their expertise and insights to support the Dicastery in its mission of promoting human dignity, development and integral human progress.” 

Profile

Rev Fr. Emmanuel Katongole, 60 years old, is Professor of Theology and Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He holds a joint appointment with the Keough School of Global Affairs, where he serves as a full-time faculty member of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies.


Before joining the University of Notre Dame (Jan 2013), he served as Associate Professor of Theology and World Christianity at Duke University, and as founding co-director of the Duke Centre for Reconciliation.


He is the founder and President of Bethany Land Institute, a program that works with young people to realise the vision, spirituality and practice of Laudato Si' in an African setting.
