HOIMA - Police in Hoima district are hunting for a driver who allegedly attempted to run over a police officer after officers interrupted him while he was reportedly having sex with a married woman inside a vehicle parked in the bush at night.
According to a police report seen by New Vision Online, the dramatic incident happened on the night of July 5, 2026, at about 11:00pm in Kijungu Isaka Cell, Central Ward, Hoima East Division.
The report, addressed to Albertine South region commanders, details what police have classified as an attempt by the fugitive driver to murder a police officer.
Police said they received intelligence from an informant that a white Toyota Wish had been suspiciously parked in the bush near the main gate of a secondary school in Kijungu Isaka Cell.
It is alleged that a woman had been seen entering the vehicle, raising suspicion that the occupants were engaging in sexual activity.
Acting on a tip-off, police immediately dispatched a rapid response team comprising four armed officers travelling on two police motorcycles.
Upon reaching the scene, the officers found the Toyota Wish concealed in the bushes.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspected driver was inside the vehicle, seated in the middle seat, allegedly having sexual intercourse with the woman.
According to the police report, officers ordered the man to open the vehicle doors.
Instead of complying, the suspect allegedly jumped into the driver's seat, started the engine and sped off, the report said.
In the process, the vehicle knocked down Police Constable Julius Twongo, who was thrown onto the bonnet as the driver accelerated away. Twongo later managed to jump off the car bonnet, but was left injured.
The report states that another officer, Police Constable Christopher Mwebaza, immediately fired three rounds, targeting the vehicle's tyres in an effort to stop the fleeing suspect. Despite the gunfire, the driver continued speeding away.
Police said that after driving for some distance, the suspect allegedly dumped the woman and sped off. Police officers later arrested the woman to help in their investigations.
“The suspect later abandoned the Toyota Wish along the Hoima–Karyabwire Road in Kijungu Cell,” reads the Police report.
When police recovered the vehicle, it was locked, and both the front and rear tyres had been punctured by gunfire. The vehicle was towed to Hoima Central Police Station as investigations go on.
Police identified the arrested woman as Norah Namutebi, 29, a resident of Kijungu Isaka Cell.
According to the report, investigators established that Namutebi had met the suspect while her husband was away at work.
Police have since opened a case of attempted murder against the fugitive suspect under reference number 02/06/07/26 as the hunt for him continues.
