The Police on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, said they were probing a shooting incident at Gwanda Mall, in Kisenyi Parish, Kampala Central in which a guard shot a suspected thief who attempted to disarm him.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer, at Kampala Metropolitan Police, said Police at Old Kampala had instituted inquiries into the shooting incident that occurred on June 3, 2024, at approximately 6:00 PM.

He revealed that the suspect who was shot had been admitted at Mulago National referral hospital while the hunt for the guard Ismael Kalyebi who disappeared after the incident was on.

“It is alleged that Kalyebi, a security guard attached to SGA, was on duty at Gwanda Mall when he arrested Katongole, whom he suspected to be a criminal. During the arrest, a struggle ensued, and Katongole overpowered Kalyebi. In response, Kalyebi picked up his gun and shot Katongole once in the waist, thereby disabling him,” Owoyesigyire said.

He revealed that upon receiving information about the incident, the territorial police units of Muzaana and Old Kampala responded to the scene and managed to evacuate the victim to Mulago Hospital, where he is currently admitted with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

“We have also retrieved CCTV footage to help in the ongoing investigation into what exactly led to the shooting. The suspect, Kalyebi, is currently on the run. Efforts are underway to apprehend him,” Owoyesigyire noted.

He urged the public to remain calm and report any information that may assist in the arrest of the suspect.
