Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the suspected murder involving a couple whose bodies were discovered at their home after their three children returned from church.
The deceased have been identified as Cosma Tushabirane, 40, and his wife, Speria Ayebare, 34, both residents of Rugando Village, Nyakinengo Parish, Nyakagyeme sub-county, Rukungiri District.
The incident occurred on August 16, 2026.
According to police, the couple's three children had gone to church and, upon returning home, they found all the doors of the house locked from inside.
The eldest child reportedly became suspicious and forced open one of the doors, whereupon he discovered the body of his father hanging inside the house.
Police were notified, and they responded to the scene. During a search of the house, officers reportedly also discovered the body of Ayebare in the bedroom lying in a pool of blood.
Police have not yet established the circumstances under which the two died, and investigations are ongoing.
The two bodies were conveyed to Rwakabengo Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
MURDER STATISTICS
According to the 2025 annual crime report released last week, police recorded 4,238 homicide cases in 2025, a slight decrease from 4,329 cases reported in 2024.
The victims included 3,397 adult males, 550 adult females, 173 male juveniles, and 148 female juveniles. Of these, 338 victims were killed through hacking, compared to 310 in 2024.
An analysis of the data indicates that the motives behind these killings largely stemmed from land disputes, domestic violence, acts of mob justice, family misunderstandings, crimes of passion and business rivalries.
