Police in Mukono District are investigating the murder of a 92-year-old man, in what authorities say may be linked to a family land dispute.

The deceased, Katabarwa Hassan, a resident of Kyawanvubu Village in Namataba Town Council, was attacked by unknown assailants on February 5, 2026, at around 9:30 pm. He was rushed to Kawolo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said in a statement on Saturday that the body was later taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

“A murder case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing to identify the suspects and establish the weapon used,” Owoyesigyire said. He added that investigators are looking into suspected family land wrangles as a possible motive.

Mukono District has, in recent years, witnessed several violent incidents linked to land disputes. Police have repeatedly urged families to seek legal redress rather than resorting to violence.

Owoyesigyire appealed to the public to remain calm and to share any information that could help identify the attackers.

Violence linked to land conflicts is not uncommon in Uganda. In 2015, three people were killed in two separate land disputes in Oyam District in northern Uganda.

Among the victims were Susan Betty Amongi and her primary two daughters, Priska Awino, who died after their house was set ablaze. Thomas Ocen Opiga, the Oyam District Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Officer, said preliminary investigations indicated the attack was motivated by opposition to a land sale.

In 2023, five suspects were arrested in connection with the brutal murder of a landlord and her husband in Mubende District.

The deceased, 54-year-old Milly Naava Namutebi and her 53-year-old husband, Abudallah Kayizi, were attacked by a mob armed with machetes, axes, and clubs, leaving family members traumatised.

In 2024, renewed violence over the disputed Apaa land, claimed by both Amuru and Adjumani districts, left two people dead and another injured.

Reports indicated that retaliatory attacks between the Acholi and Madi communities escalated after clashes over a community access road.

Capt. Hassan Ahmed Kato, Fourth Infantry Division spokesperson, said that the army had increased security in the area to prevent further violence.
