Police probe death of Kayunga peasant found in swamp with deep cuts

KAYUNGA - Police are investigating the circumstances under which a 28-year-old peasant was found dead in Kyambogo swamp in Kayunga district.
According to police, the body of Robert Ssekabu, a resident of Kivulu village, Kayunga Town Council, was discovered around 9:00am on August 11 by a passerby, who alerted area village chairperson, Ali Kapere.
It was Kapere who reported the incident to Kayunga Police. "Ssekabu's body had deep cuts to the neck and head," said Hellen Butoto, the Police Publicist for Sezibwa Region.
As a result, detectives at Kayunga police station opened a murder case under reference number CRB 957/2026.
A tracker dog was deployed at the scene, but it lost the suspects' scent.
Police said the wounds were most likely inflicted on Ssekabu using a sharp object, which caused fatal blood loss.
"Investigations are ongoing to hunt down the suspects," said Butoto.
The body has since been taken to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

According to the 2025 annual crime report released last week, police recorded 4,238 homicide cases in 2025, a slight decrease from 4,329 cases reported in 2024.
The victims included 3,397 adult males, 550 adult females, 173 male juveniles, and 148 female juveniles. Of these, 338 victims were killed through hacking, compared to 310 in 2024.
An analysis of data indicates that the motives behind these killings largely stemmed from land disputes, domestic violence, acts of mob justice, family misunderstandings, crimes of passion and business rivalries.
