Police in the Bukedi South region are investigating two separate incidents in Busia and Tororo districts that left one person dead and several others injured.
In Tororo District, a 37-year-old businesswoman died after the veranda of a building housing shops collapsed in Malaba Town Council.
The incident occurred on September 19 at about 2:20pm in Malaba East Cell and was reported at Malaba police station under reference number DEF (Death Enquiry File) 006/2026.
The deceased was identified as Everline Akuron, 37, a businesswoman and resident of Obore Ward, Malaba Town Council.
Police said the front section of the building, which served as a shade or veranda, suddenly collapsed, injuring several people and damaging merchandise in the shops.
Akuron was among those rescued by members of the public and rushed to Specialist Plaza Tororo Hospital under police escort, but she died upon arrival.
Three other people were injured, including Scovia Sanyu, 32, a businesswoman, who sustained injuries to her right lower leg.
Police said the collapsed section covered four shops, all occupied by different tenants selling clothes, shoes and other merchandise.
The landlords were identified as Christine Okadapa, 60, and Richard Emapus, 50, both residents of Tororo.
Detectives and scene-of-crime officers visited and documented the scene under the command of the officer in charge of Malaba Police Station and the officer-in-charge of criminal investigations.
The affected section of the building was cordoned off and placed under police guard to prevent further accidents.
A general inquiry file was opened to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse. The body was taken to Tororo General Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
Chinese probed over assault
Meanwhile, police in Busia are investigating allegations that four Chinese nationals and eight private security guards attached to Wagagai Mining Company assaulted a 60-year-old man and his son at their home in Amagoro Village, Buteba Sub-county.
The incident occurred on September 18 at about 11:00pm and was reported at Busia police station under reference number CRB 928/2026.
When he went outside to establish what was happening, he allegedly found four Chinese nationals and eight private security guards at his son’s room.
According to the complaint, the group allegedly forced their way into David’s room, dragged him outside and assaulted him.
Khauka told police that when he tried to establish why his son was being beaten, the group allegedly turned on him and assaulted him too.
According to Police, the group later withdrew but returned and allegedly continued assaulting the victims before firing four bullets in the air.
Johnson Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South regional police spokesperson, said preliminary investigations had established that the assault occurred and that the group allegedly took the law into their own hands.
He said police had also established that no complaint had been registered by the group against the victims over an alleged theft from the mining company before they assaulted them.
Police registered a case of criminal trespass and assault occasioning grievous harm under reference number SD 03/19/09/26.
Statements have been recorded from the victims and witnesses, and a Police visited the scene as part of the investigation.
