Police in Zombo district are investigating the circumstances under which an 11-month-old baby was burnt to death on December 1, 2025, at Amogi cell, Jupandindo ward in Padea town council.

Police have identified the victim as Pimer Pamungu Pretty.

According to police, the incident was reported by the mother of the deceased, Jennifer Ayunga, a peasant and resident of the same cell.

It is alleged that at about midday on Monday, the mother had gone to a nearby valley to look for vegetables, leaving her two young children, including the 11-month-old victim, sleeping inside their grass-thatched house.

West Nile Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia explained that the mother returned home after hearing an alarm.

Neighbours and community members searched through the ashes and retrieved the charred remains of the baby.

Angucia said officers visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from relevant witnesses, conducted a post-mortem examination at the scene, and handed the body over to relatives for burial.

She said efforts to identify and arrest the suspected arsonist are ongoing, and inquiries are continuing in Paidha under CRB 379/2025.
