Police in Kaliro district have arrested a police officer, Sgt Charles Kyakwise, to aid in investigations into the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old student.

Kyakwise, who is attached to Kaliro Police Station, was taken into custody following the incident that occurred at Kyani, Bumanya Sub-County.

Speaking to New Vision Online on Sunday, Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha identified the deceased as Mudago Sogo, a student of Kaliro Vocational Secondary School.

According to initial findings, on 8th March 2025, a resident of Kananzoki village, Mutebi Godfrey, reported a case of cattle theft by unknown persons. Police officers were dispatched to the scene, and a sniffer dog was introduced to aid in the investigation.

The dog traced the scent to a bar, leading officers to Bosco Zigondo Pande, a known habitual thief.

As the police attempted to apprehend the suspect, a crowd gathered, became rowdy, and began pelting stones at the officers in an apparent attempt to carry out mob justice.

Kasadha said that as tensions escalated, the officers took shelter inside the bar with the suspect in an effort to calm the situation.

"The angry mob advanced, and when the scuffle escalated, Sgt Kyakwise discharged a bullet, which struck and fatally injured Mudago Sogo. The suspect was then rescued and taken to Kaliro Central Police Station," he said.

Sogo succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. His body was later taken to Bumanya Health Centre IV mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched further investigations to establish more details surrounding the incident.
