Kampala Metropolitan Police's operation earlier Friday, August 22, netted nine suspects believed to be hardcore criminals.
The hunt aimed at eradicating Kampala of thugs who vandalise and steal from motor vehicles, especially during traffic jams, covered different spots on Jinja Road, Old Portbell Road, Wampewo Avenue and the Mukwano roundabout stretch.
Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the operation followed several complaints from the public, both on social media and at police stations.
The criminals, he added, named vehicles, Toyota Harriers and Mercedes Benzes as the biggest targets. The thugs target parts such as side mirrors and front vents of moving or parked cars.
The operation was commanded by officers from the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala and Jinja Road Police Division.
The suspects captured and detained at CPS include Dan Makana, Stephen Kajubi, Stephen Owundo, Ibra Asiimwe, Isaac Kageni, Baba, Izo Bindusa, Dan and Ibra.
According to Owoyesigire, the suspects who confessed to vandalism and theft are cooperating with the Police to trace other wanted accomplices still at large, namely Musiramu, Juice (Bugolobi), and others.
"Kampala Metropolitan Police will continue to carry out intelligence-led and disruptive operations across divisional boundaries, especially within and around the CBD, to eradicate criminal elements involved in vandalism and theft from motor vehicles," he stated.
