Police have arrested a suspect following a violent attack that left five cattle seriously injured, as investigators probe what appears to be a conflict involving livestock keepers and crop farmers in Kasese district.
The arrest comes after detectives and local leaders visited Nyamatungu village in Nyakatonzi subcounty to assess the aftermath of the attack, which livestock owners say has heightened tensions in the area.
Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson Elly Maate identified the suspect as Zaverio Muhindo, who was arrested on June 15, to assist investigators following the incident.
According to police, the violence erupted after herdsmen grazing cattle in the area were reportedly confronted by a group of men armed with pangas, spears and stones.
The attackers allegedly chased away the herdsmen before turning on the animals, leaving five cows with deep cuts.

The cattle owner, Christopher Kanonia, said he received a distress call from his herdsman informing him of the attack before reporting the matter to Nyakatonzi Police Station.
Police officers later documented the injuries, photographed the animals as evidence and processed the scene.
Investigators are pursuing additional suspects believed to have participated in the assault.
Police say inquiries are continuing to establish the motive behind the attack and determine whether criminal charges should be preferred against more individuals.
