KAMPALA - Police said Saturday they have impounded a commuter taxi reportedly linked to "alleged highway robberies".

It was impounded in Masaka and "escorted to Nateete Police Station to facilitate investigations", Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said in a statement.

The vehicle was identified as having registration number UBL 572K.

Police said the occupants of this taxi reportedly "intercepted a female victim [motorist], coerced her into opening the door, and falsely informed her that she had knocked someone dead at Namungoona roundabout along the Northern Bypass".

Highway robbers are believed to use this "deceptive tactic" to catch out targetted victims and steal their vehicles.

In an audio clip believed to have been recorded and shared by the female victim, she narrates her ordeal, saying the taxi intercepted her and the male occupants tormented and robbed her.

After that latest reported incident, the Police launched a coordinated search operation for the said taxi, leading to its interception and impoundment in Masaka.

"Efforts are currently underway to record the victim’s statement and place it on file to support ongoing investigations," said Rusoke.
