KAMPALA - Security led by the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Uganda Police Force, and Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) have impounded Speaker Anita Among’s h3.6b Rolls-Royce from her Kigo residence, among other luxurious Range Rovers.

Withdrawal from the speakership race

Searching Among’s Kigo home came hours after she late Sunday announced her withdrawal from the speakership race, saying, “I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament....”

The remarks, she posted on X, formerly Twitter, came days after security raided and searched her residences at Nakasero.

In her statement of X, Among said, “After wide consultations and deep introspection, and to maintain harmony and clarity in my beloved party, the NRM (National Resistance Movement), I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament.”

She pledged to support the candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the party, imploring fellow legislators of the 12th Parliament to do the same.

“I shall remain available to the service of my country as the party and the President may assign me,” said.

She added, “In the meantime, I pledge to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state to get to the root of all the allegations raised.”

Among’s withdrawal from the race also came at a time when the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) formally withdrew its endorsement to her as Speaker of Parliament and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa's re-election.

Withdrawing the endorsement, on May 12, 2026, and on behalf of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the PLU chairperson, Daudi Kabanda, the PLU general secretary, also Among’s ally, said the organisation had withdrawn the endorsement it had earlier issued in March backing Among and Tayebwa for the top parliamentary offices.

“On March 11, 2026, the chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba guided that all PLU-leaning members elect should support Anita Annet Among for Speaker and Tayebwa Thomas for Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament of the Republic of Uganda,” the statement read. However, Kabanda said the endorsement had now been “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”
