Police hunt woman after waitress is found stabbed to death in Kampala

Police in Kampala have launched a murder investigation after a 23-year-old waitress was found lying in a pool of blood inside her rented room in Bukoto I Parish, Nakawa Division.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said the deceased was identified as Jovia Namuwulya, who had been living in the area for about seven months.
“We confirm that Kira Police are actively investigating a murder incident that occurred on August 20, 2026, between midnight and 6:00am,” Kawala said.
According to police, Namuwulya had rented the room about seven months ago. "About three months after moving in, she received a female visitor identified as Rose Turinda-Mukama, who later started staying with her in the same room," Kawala said. Police said Turinda-Mukama has since disappeared and is on the run.
Kawala said the murder came to light after relatives of Namuwulya contacted an unidentified caretaker on August 20, asking for Namuwulya's whereabouts after she failed to respond to their calls.
The caretaker, accompanied by Namuwulya's sister, went to the room to check on her.
"Upon arrival, they found the door locked. When they looked through the window, they reportedly saw blood stains inside the room. They subsequently gained access to the room and found the victim lying in a pool of blood, but her friend (Turinda-Mukama) was nowhere to be seen," Kawala narrated.
Kawala said the murder came to light after relatives of Namuwulya contacted an unidentified caretaker on August 20, asking for Namuwulya's whereabouts after she failed to respond to their calls.
The caretaker, accompanied by Namuwulya's sister, went to the room to check on her.

Kawala said police were actively pursuing Turinda-Mukama to apprehend her.
“The body of the deceased was taken to the City Mortuary for postmortem examination. Other inquiries are ongoing, and efforts to trace and apprehend the suspect are actively being pursued,” she said.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information about the whereabouts of Turinda-Mukama to report to the nearest police station.
Kawala cautioned members of the public to be careful about people they trust and those they allow access to their homes and property.
She said public cooperation remains critical to preventing and combating crime.
“The body of the deceased was taken to the City Mortuary for postmortem examination. Other inquiries are ongoing, and efforts to trace and apprehend the suspect are actively being pursued,” she said.
