Police human rights, legal services director Kataratambi dies

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Charles Kataratambi, the Uganda Police Force director of human rights and legal services, has passed on, New Vision Online has learnt.

Senior Police officers confirmed to New Vision Online, on Thursday, October 2, 2025, after a message circulated on Police communication platforms reading: Folks, AIGP Charles Kataratambi has gone to be with the Lord.

Family sources revealed that Kataratambi breathed his last at Kampala city-based Nakasero Hospital where he had been admitted for the past five days.

Kataratambi returned to active service in 2024 after nearly nine years away from the force, when President Yoweri Museveni appointed Abas Byakagaba as Inspector General of Police.

He was subsequently assigned to head the Directorate of Human Rights and Legal Services, a role in which he was instrumental in promoting rights-based policing within the institution.

The late officer was a respected career Police commander who previously held several senior positions within the Force.

His colleagues describe him as a disciplined officer and a professional who brought integrity to every office he occupied.

Funeral arrangements had not yet been announced by press time.
