Police arrest city socialite Asiimwe over alleged fraud

Police have arrested Socialite Christian Asiimwe, widely known as Don Chris, following his return to Uganda after more than a year in hiding abroad over alleged fraud.
Police said Asiimwe allegedly obtained money by false pretense and participated in a fraudulent labour recruitment scheme.
“We confirm the arrest of Christian Asiimwe, also known as Don Chris, who was a director of the defunct labour recruitment company, Sky Pins, in connection with allegations of obtaining money by false pretenses and fraudulent labour recruitment,’’ said Racheal Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson.
According to police, the suspect obtained money from several individuals between 2022 and 2025 by falsely claiming that he could secure employment opportunities abroad.
“We have over 500 victims who have recorded statements against the suspect, Asiimwe, for job placements in countries like Canada, United Kingdom, Qatar and Dubai. The job placements included positions such as waiters, cleaners, and caregivers,” Kawala revealed.
She said most of the complainants claimed they paid between sh5m to sh10m to secure job placements.
“The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue and will be presented before court in accordance with the law,” she said.
“Members of the public with relevant information regarding this case are encouraged to report to the nearest police station,” she said.
On June 17 last year, police opened a general inquiry file following complaints of obtaining money by false pretenses against Asiimwe.
In response, however, Asiimwe was seen in videos circulating on social media dismissing the allegations and daring police to arrest him. Asiimwe then claimed he had just returned from an overseas trip and was not wanted by any authorities.
