CELEBRATING LIFE

As part of activities to celebrate the 51st birthday of the chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, supporters in Kagadi district in midwestern Uganda have launched a tree planting campaign aimed at turning the area into a green belt.

The week-long campaign that kicked off on Monday (May 26) at Kyenzige in Buyaga West constituency aims at planting over 4,000 trees in 10 town councils and subcounties, according to James Byarugaba, the PLU coordinator in Kagadi.

Byarugaba, also aspiring Member of Parliament for Buyaga West constituency, said the tree planting campaign was taken to the town councils of Mabaale, Burora, Rugashali, Kyaterekera, Mpeefu, Kyakabadiima, Kanyabebe, Galiboleka, Bwikara, Nyakarongo, Rutete, and Isungawill.

“As NRM and PLU supposters, we are responding to a call by our chairperson, Gen. Muhoozi, who asked us to dedicate this year’s birthday celebrations on planting trees and perserving our environment," he said on Thursday (May 29).

"So, this year and years to come, we need to green Kagadi and Uganda at large."

Byarugaba made the remarks during a tree planting exercise in Nyakarongo Town Council, which was attended by many supporters.

Birthday Run

The exercise will be crowned with a road run on Friday (May 30) dubbed “Gen Muhoozi's Birthday Run”.

The guest of honour is expected to be Gen. Muhoozi’s uncle, Michael Kaguta Toyota.

Wherever he has gone, Byarugaba has urged residents to take an active role in nurturing and protecting nature through planting as many trees as possible.

'We need to rejuvenate our environment'

Byarugaba stressed that the campaign is critical in mitigating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability, adding that everywhere in Kagadi, the trees are almost depleted, affecting rain season parterns.

“These days it is difficult to predict rain, and therefore farmers can not rely anymore on the previous season patterns. We need to change this and rejuvenate our environment,” he stated, adding that he would continue to supply seedlings to people to plant more trees.

He asked everyone to take it as their responibility to preserve the environment.

The Kyenzige sub-county chairman, Habbib Mugisa, and Edward Irumba, the Mabaale subcounty chairman, thanked Byarugaba for spearheading and financially supporting the campaign.

Mugisa commended his obligation to protecting the environment and called upon residents to embrace the exercise.

He said that as leaders, they would rally behind him in all his efforts.
