Members of the Atekok Aramak clan in Odusai subcounty, Agule town council, Pallisa district, have removed their clan leader, Constant Onyege II, following allegations of misuse of clan resources and abuse of office.
The decision was reached during a heated clan meeting at Ongilai cell in Odusai ward over the weekend.
Members accused Onyege of failing to account for funds reportedly collected from land transactions and contributions from politicians, which they said were intended to support clan development.
The meeting, chaired by Moses Odiago, initially focused on restoring harmony within the clan but later turned contentious, leading to Onyege’s removal from the leadership.
Meanwhile, Anna Margaret Kiyai questioned whether clan leaders are entitled to retirement benefits after Onyege reportedly referred to sh700,000 he received as his pension.
Harriet Abeja, the subcounty women’s leader, acknowledged that Onyege had previously served the clan well but said disagreements over proceeds from land sales had affected his reputation and relations with members of his executive.
Vincent Adome, who was appointed to take care of the clan’s affairs following the leadership changes, appealed to members to avoid inflammatory remarks that could deepen divisions.
The clan adviser, Charles Tukei, also threatened to resign, saying he wanted to protect his reputation and should not be associated with allegations he considered false.
Before he was formally removed, Onyege was given an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Onyege said he had used some of the money to buy plates and distributed the remaining balance among committee members but was surprised that some of them were now denying receiving the money.
